Internship Program
Summer 2009
The purpose of an internship is to provide a well-planned and supervised experience
that integrates the student’s academic preparation into a related, applied
work experience in our manufacturing environment. During the internship period,
the intern will apply academic principles to the solution of practical problems
in various areas of Manufacturing.

This internship at Weber Metals has really opened my eyes about the engineering world. It gave me a great perspective on the responsibilities of an actual engineer. The projects I received taught me how to manage my time and resources. My supervisors challenged me to think outside my normal thought process and stretched my mental capabilities. I negotiated with companies, held meetings, wrote proposals and ran my own experiments. As I finished my projects I watched as they were implemented in the company. This gave me a sense of ownership and pride for my work. This type of experience cannot be found in the classroom.
Weber Metals has provided me with a valuable toolset that I can use to succeed in the engineering world. I would recommend this internship to anybody interested in working hard and making an actual difference at their workplace.

Never could I have predicted just how huge of an impact Weber Metals would have on me in only 3 months. But at the conclusion of a couple challenging intern projects, here I am, completely sold on this company and all it stands for. I have had the opportunity to not just meet, but truly build relationships with employees at all levels of the organization. These are all prime examples of what makes this company such an amazing place to work.
Throughout this summer, I have been given the tools to accomplish many things, from developing a way to track worker efficiencies to researching, designing, presenting and implementing a ventilation system to remove smoke from titanium torch cutting operations. This was not just typical “intern” work you might find at other companies – the projects assigned to myself have either been implemented or are in the development process with target implementation dates, this shows just how much Weber Metals truly respects its interns’ efforts and commitment to continuously improving their processes.
Overall, my expectations were completely blown away by this internship. After meeting an incredible mentor as well as peers, coupled with learning more in one short summer than I typically do in an entire year – I could not have asked for a better experience.

Completing my internship at Weber Metals helped me expand my knowledge and understanding of the metallurgical world. During the time I spent at Weber, I was given projects that I could take charge of and get really involved in. Working on these projects helped me improve my communication skills as well as further my knowledge and interest in the field. Between holding meetings, performing tests, analysis, and writing reports, I was able to take advantage of the many opportunities given to me.
Because of the company’s strong sense of dedication and pride, I was very pleased with my time spent at Weber Metals. I would recommend this company to anyone looking for an internship involving plenty of hands on work, with people who really make the experience educational and enjoyable!

I
consider myself lucky that I was given the opportunity to work with Weber Metals,
Inc. In 3 months, I feel I have gained a wealth of knowledge that will lay the foundation
for my career. The projects my supervisors assigned allowed me to develop an understanding
of how to properly conduct business and manage projects.
Although this was
the first year Weber Metals implemented an intern program, it felt as though this
program had been in place for years. The head of the intern program was very organized
in his methods of guidance and after a very short time, I was very comfortable approaching
him with any concerns I had. I would highly recommend this program to anyone interested
because not only will they learn a lot, but it will provide skills and lessons that
cannot be learned in school.

Weber
Metals offered something that an engineering school cannot; experience. Unlike other
internships, Weber Metals put me in the middle of all the action. I worked closely
with a mentor who helped me tremendously and was partnered with a sponsor who oversaw
the progress of my five engineering projects that would directly influence the company.
Working on these projects put me in the shoes of a project engineer, a design engineer,
researcher, business analyst, writer and spokesman.
I found my personal strengths through this internship. I will now be able to focus
and relate theory from the classroom to applicable skill sets for the industry.
Weber Metals is a fast paced challenging company to work for in a growing industry.
An internship at Weber Metals will be the best 12 weeks of any student’s college
life.

My internship at Weber Metals has been a challenging and rewarding experience.
Working here has given me many valuable lessons that I believe I could not learn
anywhere else. This internship taught me valuable lessons about industry,
teamwork, communication, and responsibility. However what I discovered to be
most invaluable was the leadership, ownership, and pride that I took for each of
my projects.
The level of responsibility required to manage each project was much greater
than the responsibilities of a typical internship. I realized a sense of
ownership knowing that my projects will directly affect the company’s future
business outlook. Although managing projects can be quite stressful at times,
the knowledge and experience of people around me were always available to help
me with my struggles.
I’ve developed a great respect and bond for my fellow interns; we are truly a
family here at Weber Metals Inc.

The experience and knowledge gained through Weber Metals during my summer internship is something that will support me throughout life. During my internship I was able to view and experience the time, effort, and commitment put into the plant from all levels of workers.
Weber Metals gave me a real insight to what an actual engineering job would demand. Each intern was given projects that would be encountered by a full time engineer and had a meaningful priority to the company. The facility is
handled in a professional manner, but there is also a sense of team and family.
There was never a dull moment with the internship. Deadlines had to be met, goals
had to be accomplished, and commitments had to be kept.
Through the length of the internship, I learned to hold meetings, accommodate project updates, the value of
teamwork, write formal documents, consult and consider the needs of co-workers,
and to interact with vendors. I received the opportunity to address situations that
involved design, safety, facility, growth, and energy consumption. The projects
that I received, I believe, have made me a better engineer and will contribute greatly
to my future employment. My internship at Weber Metals was a memorable experience
and has helped me become a more mature and versatile engineer.

An
internship is a key component for any aspiring engineer. The summer internship at
Weber Metals was very rewarding. I believe that the two and a half months of valuable
experience interacting with the engineers within the company was outstanding compared
to simply sitting in a classroom.
While working in the engineering department, I was exposed to the whole engineering
process of die forgings from the industry's perspective. From quoting parts to blocker
die designs to simulation software, I truly gained an edge over my peers. Some of
my duties also included document management. I was responsible for handling documents
from various aerospace companies thus allowing Weber to manage quality specifications
electronically online. Not only did I learn a range of engineering techniques from
Weber, I also learned how companies in the manufacturing industry handle their specifications
and how they conduct revisions to their products.
I look forward to excelling in school this fall with my added knowledge of the engineering
industry. I am also grateful to take with me the professional ethics of the friendly
Weber Metals staff and their charismatic work habits.
